Securing the system from the potential mischief of employees or users who are otherwise in good standing is a great step forward, but it only covers a system that is isolated from the outside world. This is clearly not a realistic prospect, since most Linux servers are deployed to serve the user population over a network that is often public. Thus, the diligent Linux administrator should carefully evaluate the server's physical connection to the network, including all its interface, their TCP/IP configurations and, most important the configuration of the server's active network daemons.
